Concrete Patios Installed in Cecil, Harford, and Chester Counties

A well installed concrete patio is more than just pouring concrete. It requires careful preparation, quality materials, and proven installation methods to ensure long-term durability and performance.

At Crockett & Sons Concrete, Inc., we follow a proven step-by-step process to build concrete patios that last a lifetime and will give you and your family years of memories! We have been building patios for over 30 years and have a system that delivers quality

Our construction process includes:

Step 1: Demolition and Removal (If Needed)

If an existing patio is present, the first step is demolition.

  • Old concrete, asphalt , or pavers are broken up and removed
  • Debris is hauled away or disposed of properly
  • The area is cleared and prepared for new construction

Removing failing concrete ensures the new patio is built on a solid foundation.

Step 2: Excavation

Next, the patio area is excavated to the proper depth.

  • Excavation accounts for concrete thickness and stone base
  • Proper grading is established for drainage
  • Soft or unsuitable soil is removed as needed

Correct excavation is critical to prevent settling, cracking, and drainage issues.

Step 3: Existing Soil Inspection

Once excavated, the existing soil subgrade is inspected.

  • Soil is checked for stability and compaction
  • Soft or unstable areas are addressed
  • The subgrade is leveled and compacted

A stable soil base helps support the patio and prevents future movement.

Step 4: Existing Stone Base Inspection

If an existing stone base is present, it is carefully evaluated.

  • Stone depth and condition are inspected
  • Compaction is checked
  • Areas that are insufficient or uneven are corrected

If the existing stone base meets requirements, it may be reused and supplemented.

Step 5: Stone Base Installation or Enhancement (Typically 4")

Depending on site conditions, we either:

  • Add to the existing stone base, or
  • Install a new stone base, typically 4 inches thick

The stone base is:

  • Spread evenly
  • Properly graded
  • Mechanically compacted

A well-compacted stone base provides structural support and improves drainage.

Step 6: Rebar Reinforcement (24" On Center)

Steel reinforcement is installed to strengthen the concrete slab.

  • Rebar is placed on 24-inch centers
  • Reinforcement is properly supported to remain within the slab
  • This helps control cracking and adds structural strength

Rebar significantly increases the patios strength and life expectancy

Step 7: Fiber Mesh Added to the Concrete Mix

In addition to steel reinforcement, fiber mesh is added directly to the concrete mix.

Fiber mesh helps:

  • Reduce plastic shrinkage cracking
  • Improve overall concrete durability
  • Enhance surface integrity

Using both rebar and fiber mesh provides layered reinforcement for long-term performance.

Step 8: Pouring 4" of 4000 PSI Concrete

The patio is poured using 4 inches of 4000 PSI concrete, which is stronger than standard residential mixes.

  • Color is added if required and the concrete is placed evenly
  • Proper finishing techniques are used
  • Control joints are installed to manage cracking
  • If the patio is going to be stamped this would also be done at this time
  • The next day saw cutting would be completed as required and washing/cleaning the patio would be completed
  • Finally, your patio would get (2) coats of decorative concrete sealer of your choice

Step 9: Backfilling and Final Cleanup

After the concrete has been placed and finished:

  • Edges are backfilled using existing dirt on site
  • Grade is restored around the patio
  • Straw and seed would be placed
  • The job site is thoroughly cleaned
  • Typically all you would have left to do is run the sprinkler for the grass seed

We leave your property neat, safe, and ready for use once curing is complete.

Built the Right Way from the Ground Up

Every step in our patiio construction process is designed to ensure:

  • Proper drainage
  • Structural strength
  • Long-lasting performance and years of use
  • Clean, professional results

Cutting corners during preparation leads to premature cracking and failure — which is why we don’t skip these very important steps.
